South Manchester/Cheshire - Niche Manufacturing Company I was contacted by a small niche manufacturing Company on the South Manchester/Cheshire borders who had been without HR help and advice for some 18 months or more and they had been looking after the HR themselves. However, they felt that they really hadn’t got a handle on things, particularly as attrition rates had increase, sickness had increased and there was a problem with one of the departments and the team members in that department not getting on well, which was affecting productivity! After our initial telephone discussion, I arranged to go and have a no obligation meeting with them and ask them to let me have all their current documentation before I went along so I could review their current HR landscape. At our initial meeting I was able to give them my feedback regarding their current documents and go into more depth around the issues they were having … We discussed the various aspects that needed to be worked on and decided on a plan which (as is often the case) started with getting their contracts and the Company Handbook up to scratch! So, we undertook this foundation project over the coming month and they then had brand new up to date contract templates, which we rolled out to all current employees with an explanation letter and at the same time we captured in a new Company Handbook everything that they needed to cover to ensure complete clarity regarding all elements of the staff’s employment! This was welcomed by both Directors and employees alike because everyone then knew what was expected of them in their employment relationship! After which they signed up to our foundation retainer package which gave them the peace of mind that I was there for them on a continuous basis, but we also undertook additional projects along the way, which they received at a reduced hourly rate as a retained client!

Stoke on Trent - Builder’s Merchants I was contacted by a local Company in Stoke on Trent who had been successfully trading in the professional builders’ merchant sector for over 35 years! The owner’s daughter had come into the business after working in several other successful corporate businesses, and she insisted that her father reviewed all elements of the ways of working, before she took over from him as M.D. She highlighted to me that although they were successful, she knew there was a lot of work to do regarding getting all the HR elements of the business legally compliant and introducing best practice into the Company. At the start of our discussions and my HR review it was vital that not only the Owner’s daughter but also the Owner trusted me to give them the best advice as well as making sure that the budget they spent was necessary and cost effective! We had a lot of work to do so we planned out the priorities which enabled them to work through everything they needed, and they could budget accordingly. I also had to advise them to work with an associate of mine to get their HSE fully compliant and undertake the necessary training which had been lacking in previous years! So, whilst the HSE Consultant worked with them on all the aspects in that area that needed work, I focused on again making sure firstly their documentation and contracts were all legal and then we tackled other issues like re-occurring sickness problems and streamlining their agents in the different regions. I am now pleased to say that everything is much quieter, and issues are now kept to a minimum. Of course, they have since needed free updating of documents after for instance GDPR legislation in 2018, and they benefitted as a retained client, from my free GDPR Toolkit and advice pack which is usually £395 that provides all templates that any small business needs to ensure they are compliant with the newer Data Protection legislation!

Central Manchester - Online Fashion When the Financial Director of an up and coming on-line central Manchester Fashion Brand, contacted me to explore more about my services; I was very excited to potentially become a part of this exciting enterprise! They wanted to review all their current arrangements and new that they were out of step with what was needed both legally and to ensure employee satisfaction! We once again needed to put in place the foundations of the legally compliant and up to date Employment Contracts and provide them with their bespoke Company Handbook with specific requirements for their international manufacturing as well as their on-line presence. Once we got all the documentation updated we could then turn our attention to ensuring all elements of their people planning was approached from not only from a legal perspective, but also, we ensured that even their rationalisation of certain parts of the business allowed the people effected to have more than what was required legally regarding consultations etc. but actually received best practice processes and consultation periods which help the few people who were leaving extra time to find their new roles outside of the Company! Something that everyone felt was well worth the extra effort and time! This approach works especially well in a small business; as even the employees who remain appreciate, that the Company has worked with employees that had to depart and really helped them have that extra time to move on with their careers elsewhere! This is the 21st century approach to HR and People Management! As even when rationalisation must happen in a business, there are many ways you can do it! The right way or the wrong! My clients where very grateful for best practice ways of working and approaching this business necessity!
