I hate being ill. I wake up every morning and get disappointed when I still have that sore throat or stuffy nose. The thing is I can never pin-point when I go from being ill to being better. I just am.
The same thing happens when we try to change our behaviour.
Fake it till you make it
Act like you already have the job
You got to believe it if you want to achieve it
What these sayings are telling you is to act the part. It is not about lying and pretending you have a skill when you don’t. It is about changing your behaviour; be more confident, disciplined, or ambitious so it becomes more natural over time.
Define an image of the ‘you’ you want to become. Look for role models and study them, then try and act like them.
Consider what your body language is communicating. Do you stride into a room with your head held high meeting people’s eyes or do you creep in with your eyes on the floor hovering to the side of the room?
Dress the part. Different industries have different images so see who is already in a position you want, dress like them. It will subconsciously tell them if you’re like them or if you’re different.
Take action. Learn the skills that you need and get feedback so that you know what you need to improve. Get a mentor.
Practice, practice, practice and one day you will just be what you want to be. . . .
