What to expect in counselling

What to expect in counselling

Counselling can feel like a big step and if you are thinking about it or new to the idea, here is what to expect:

The first session

Your counsellor is likely to carry out an assessment to understand your reasons for seeking counselling. This will help the counsellor to get to know you and it’s a good opportunity for you to ask questions about counselling too.

The setting

Counselling normally takes place in a private setting. A private setting is vital as this will help you to feel comfortable in talking about your issues without any interruptions or distractions.

Boundaries

Expect your counsellor to outline the boundaries of counselling, a good counsellor will work within an ethical framework; what this means is your counsellor will work with you in a safe, non-judgemental and respectful way.

The boundaries of counselling are normally set out and agreed in a counsellor/client contract where both parties have to agree to the terms and conditions.

If you would like to know more about an ethical framework, look at the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy for further information.

Sessions

The number of sessions, time and dates are normally agreed between you and your counsellor. Generally sessions take place on weekly basis, however this may vary depending on the requirements of counselling.

Building a rapport

Expect your counsellor to build a rapport with you, they are invested in you and your story. Their job is to try and understand your world to enable you to overcome some of the difficulties you have been experiencing. Expect them to listen, to be patient and to be respectful.

If you are thinking about counselling and have questions to ask, feel free to get in touch!
