Summary

Few people have heard about Birthlink Charity, a small Scottish charity based here at 21 Castle Street, Edinburgh, but our origins date back to 1911. Around 1930s until 1980s there were forced adoption practices in Scotland when babies were removed from their birth mothers and placed with adoptive parents.

In 1984 Birthlink established an Adoption Contact Register which invites adopted people, birth parents and other birth relatives to register their details in the hope that there will be a link allowing future contact. Our aim is to enhance and promote the well-being of adults who have been separated or estranged from family by adoption, the care system, or other circumstances. 2024 marks our 40-year milestone anniversary of connecting thousands of people with the Adoption Contact Register.
