Confidence is the key to success, piece of mind and wellbeing. Having self-confidence
boosts your self-esteem and helps you achieve your goals.
Self-confidence is all about having faith in your own abilites. By trusting these abilities,
you will be able to deal with anything. It is not something you are necessarily born with, but it is a
behaviour or a way of approaching things that can be learned.
You are likely to feel confident when:
- You know what you’re talking about
- You do something you’ve done well before
- You are with people you trust
5 top tips:
- Recognising your abilites, talents, and successes - we tend to focus on our weaknesses and lose the ability to recognise our strengths and successes however small they may be. Focusing on your strengths helps you and others build confidence in your abilites.
- Looking at and challenging your beliefs about yourself - confront your fears and ask what you are so afraid of. When you break it down, it may be something you can deal with and succeed.
- Achieving small challenges - pushing yourself a little and making progress in small steps increases your confidence. You need take small risks to gain big rewards. Give it a go!
- Being aware of your verbal and non-verbal language - confidence can mean not feeling threatened by anybody. In terms of body language, stay relaxed, stand upright, and try not to wrap your arms around your body or slouch. If you are speaking or presenting, take deep breaths and speak slowly and purposefully.
- Learning to make decisions and prioritise your tasks - being focused and well-organised can boost your self-confidence as you get things done.
