Risk of driving with Bald tyres

Risk of driving with Bald tyres

Tyres make an integral component of your vehicle. They play a major role in your car's performance. It is pertinent to take good care of your tyres so they don’t wear quickly. Drivers and car owners usually make minor mistakes that lead to major problems.

Driving on bald tyres is one of them. Professionals are against their use. They believe that it is highly dangerous to drive with bald tyres. It is recommended to replace your tyres Peterborough as soon as the tread depth reaches the standard limit.

What happens when one drives on bald tyres?

Many surveys have concluded that 10 per cent of the total accidents are caused due to tyre issues, including bald tyres. Here are the reasons why you should refrain from driving with bald tyres:

Tyre failure

Wet roads are often considered dangerous to drive on. This leads us to the delusion that dry roads are safe. However, this is not true! Bald tyres can cause problems even on dry roads. There are high chances of skidding in such a scenario.

Lower tread depth or worn tyres also signify that the true structure has gone thin. This increases the chances of a tyre puncture as a hard and sharp object can easily pierce through the thin surface. Worn-out tyres, when over-inflated, can burst pretty easily. This can prove to be fatal for you and other drivers around you.

Hydroplaning and loss of vehicle control

Traction is of utmost importance, especially when you are driving on wet or snowy roads. The tread grooves and sipes help in channelling the water away from the tyre surface. This minimises the contact between tyres and water, reducing the chances of slipping. But if your car tyres have worn down and there are no grooves on them, what will happen? The vehicle will slip and you will lose control. No matter how hard you apply brakes in such conditions, the chances of a fatal accident are very high. It has been found that bald tyres double the stopping distance.

Tyre pressure becomes an issue

Surveys have revealed that bald tyres lose their air pressure at a faster rate than those with tread depth. Under-inflated tyres can reduce the vehicle’s performance. They also affect your fuel economy and make it difficult for you to apply brakes. With bald tyres, you will have to kiss your driving comfort goodbye.

Excessive heat build-up

It is normal for the tyres to experience high temperatures while running on the road. Due to continuous friction between the road and tyres, the temperature eventually goes up. This builds heat, which becomes a major problem if you are driving with bald tyres. The thickness of the tyre helps in reducing the heat build-up. But bald tyres do not have adequate thickness. The tread grooves are responsible for channelling the air, which cools down the surface. With no tread depth, it becomes impossible to cool down the tyres.

When to replace the tyres?

The Ministry of Transport in the UK has recognised 1.6 mm as the standard tread depth. It is illegal to drive tyres with tread depth less than the standard limit. This may cost you 3 penalty points and a fine of £2500.

Many professionals recommend replacing tyres as soon as the tread depth reaches 3 mm. This is done to ensure that enough grip is maintained in wet weather conditions. You should regularly check the tread depth of your tyres to keep a good track of them. It is also advised to change the tyres every 5 years. However, this also depends on the condition you drive in and your usage.

Your safety depends heavily on tyres. You need excellent assistance in enhancing your tyre's life.
