Premier League Clubs Agree to Withdraw Gambling Sponsorships on Front of Shirts

Premier League Clubs Agree to Withdraw Gambling…

After consultation between the Premier League (PL), its 20 clubs, and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Premier League clubs have decided to pull gambling sponsorship from front of shirt fronts - becoming the first UK sports league to do so.

Eight Premier League clubs currently rely on gambling companies as main shirt sponsors, worth an estimated PS60m annually. But as of 2025/26 season they must find new deals.

Campaign group The Big Step calls for a ban

Campaign group The Big Step has issued a call on England's top flight to take one step further and ban gambling ads altogether. Just over three years ago, almost 30 clubs in both Premier League and Championship had ads advertising gambling companies prominently displayed on their shirt fronts.

James Grimes, founder of The Big Step campaign and one of the three keynote speakers at this year's Public Libraries of Scotland (PL) Conference said this announcement by the PL is welcome, yet falls short in terms of acknowledging the harms gambling causes to society and falling short in meeting needs. He stated:

"Without government action on all forms of gambling ads in football at every level, online casinos will exploit any voluntary measures and market their products through our national sport".

The Premier League will only remove sponsor logos from the front of shirt sponsorship until 2025-26, but are expected to feature betting brands in other areas such as on sleeves and LED advertising at stadiums. This decision was reached voluntarily between the league, clubs and Department for Culture Media and Sport.

It is a voluntary agreement

The Premier League has become the first sports league in the UK to voluntarily withdraw gambling sponsorships from club shirts following an in-depth consultation process involving clubs, the League and DCMS as part of government efforts to review gambling legislation.

Eight Premier League clubs currently employ gambling companies as shirt sponsors, estimated at PS60m annually. West Ham and Everton are currently earning the most from these deals while Aston Villa, Fulham, Bournemouth Leeds United Newcastle United Southampton all also have deals in place with gambling firms.

Premier League clubs have today collectively agreed to remove gambling sponsorship from matchday shirts in an effort to reduce gambling advertising, making this voluntary move the first sports league in the UK to take such action." This change will take effect starting with 2025/26 season but any existing contracts will still be valid.

It is a step in the right direction

The Premier League has become the first sports league in the UK to withdraw gambling sponsorships on front shirts voluntarily, commencing with 2025/26 season.

Campaign group The Big Step believes it marks an acknowledgement of the harm gambling sponsorship causes and an important step toward its outlawing. Led by people affected by gambling - both recovered addicts as well as bereaved families of those who have passed due to addictions - The campaign group hopes this marks a symbolic step towards ending gambling sponsorship altogether.

Eight top-flight clubs boast gambling companies estimated to be worth an estimated annual total of PS60m: Everton, West Ham United, Southampton, Fulham, Bournemouth AFC Bournemouth Leeds United and Newcastle United are just a few examples.

The Premier League recently announced it had agreed to remove gambling sponsorship from clubs' shirts as part of its work with the government to examine current law regarding gambling sponsorship in England and establish a code of responsible gambling sponsorship with other sports leagues.
