Spanish Expressions with Colours

Colours in Spanish are used to describe many different things, but they are also used in idiomatic expressions. These kinds of expressions will help you expand your vocabulary and help you sound more like a native because they are so broadly used.

Here are a few useful expressions that will help you practice the colours in Spanish:

“Prensa amarilla” – “Yellow press”. This expression refers to a specific kind of journalism that’s not focused on facts, but rather on shocking the audience to increase sales. Example: “Ella lee demasiada prensa amarilla.” – “She reads too much yellow press.”

“Novela negra” – “Crime novel”. Crime novels are often referred to as “black novels” in Spanish (“novelas negras”), and it’s a very common expression. Example: “A Juan le gustan las novelas negras.” – “Juan likes crime novels.”

“Ver la vida color de rosa” – “To see the world through rose-tinted glasses”. This expression is used to describe people who are overly optimistic. Example: “Siempre ve la vida color de rosa.” – “He always sees the world through rose-tinted glasses.”

“Pasar la noche en blanco” – “To have a sleepless night”. This expression is very clear and you can use it whenever you’re battling insomnia. Example: “Ayer pasé la noche en blanco.” – “I didn’t sleep a wink yesterday.”
