The Impact of Covid-19: Students and Jobs

On 25th of September the reported coronavirus cases in UK spiked up to 6,873. A huge part of these cases were students who were lately put under forced lockdown within university dorms and block apartments. The purpose behind such stern steps is to contain the virus and to prevent healthy people from getting infected but the students are facing tough times while being enclosed in a room away from their family. The situation is worse for final year graduates who are going to enter the dreaded job market. The global economy will face severest recession since the Second World War and the percentage right now will continue to rise. We can say that this is the toughest job market in decades. Graduates of 2020 will be less likely to find work and even if somehow they are able to find a job it will be low-paying occupation.

  • Thousands of students had interviews or internships lined up for the year but because of coronavirus, businesses houses are changing their plans and some are even cancelling or postponing their recruitment process.
  • The Institute of Student Employers conducted a survey according to which a significant number of businesses are considering to cut off their number of new employees.
  • More than 30% slash will be made on internships this year.
  • Research in UK has found that only 18% of the total graduates are securing a job for themselves as compared to 60% in a typical year.

The despair and hopelessness of students is an obvious reaction to the job market scenario and now it all is becoming even worse with the locking of students inside universities. While the students are in misery there is also no relief for their families,

  • TheResolution foundation survey says that around six million economically backward households will witness a sharp 20 pound cut on their incomes.

  • Apart from the Resolution foundation, the charity also conducted a survey, according to which more than 40% of young people between 16 to 25 years are pessimistic regarding their own future as well as the after pandemic world.

It is hard to believe that even after fulfilling a certain eligibility criteria the students will have to grab on any job they can find and it will be hard for them to get what they had actually aspired for. Today the point is to survive and forage money for food rather than looking for the luxury of well-deserved pay. The pandemic has proved to be havoc for student community and all young people who could have otherwise, utilized their energy in education and productive jobs. Even the students who had graduated in the previous year and were on a contract are losing their contract. The students are facing a psychological trauma and anxiety because they cannot see their future straight up. Some after trying hard to find a job are instead upskilling themselves by going for diplomas in their relevant field. But even that seems difficult because you can only meet your educators once or twice a week that too if you are not under isolation. Some reputed companies are providing some Assignment Help or Homework Help online but that is also categorized as unethical by universities. Science Assignment Help, case study or Essay Writing Services which is necessary in absence of educators and one-to-one educators was previously sought by students online but with new guidelines, the students trying to study in isolation have been left in lurch. New policies should be introduced to help students study and get a job. The student community is any country’s future and we cannot disappoint them by being harsh and ruthless policies.
