WHAT HAPPENS: when a Type-A personality goes into Overwhelm?

WHAT HAPPENS: when a Type-A personality goes into…

SWEEPING STATEMENT: Many Business People have at least some of traits of the Type A Personality, which gives them the focus and drive to build their business or team, ensure everything is ship shape and ready to go. Sometimes they run their personal lives that way too.

But I also see highly stressed Type A’s who don’t begin to apply the brakes until they are so overwhelmed that their body let’s them know it’s time to take a break. (A mild heart attack is generally a reliable prompt!)

A typical Type A response to overwhelm might involve:

Ø TAKING CHARGE: Type A’s often have a strong desire to take control. They may respond to overwhelm by immediately trying to organize and prioritise tasks, seeking to regain a sense of control.

Ø WORKING HARDER: Type A’s tend to be driven and ambitious. When faced with overwhelm, they may push themselves to work even harder, believing that increased effort will help them overcome challenges and accomplish more.

Ø SETTING HIGH STANDARDS: Type A’s often have high expectations for themselves and others. In response to overwhelm, they may set even higher standards, striving for perfection in an attempt to manage stress and meet their goals.

Ø AVOIDING RELAXATION: Type A’s may struggle to relax and unwind, viewing downtime as unproductive. Instead of taking breaks to recharge, they may continue working relentlessly in an effort to tackle their overwhelming workload.

Ø DIFFICULTY DELEGATING: Type A’s may have difficulty delegating tasks or asking for help when overwhelmed; preferring to handle everything themselves, believing that they can do it better of faster than others.

Are the alarm bells ringing yet?

When pushed, we all naturally revert to the behaviours that have served us well and do them all the more intently. Overall, a typical Type A response to overwhelm involves a frightening combination of control-seeking behaviours, increased effort, high standards, reluctance to relax and a tendency to take on too much, without delegating tasks. The real problem comes when they don’t realise what they’re doing and how it’s affecting them.

Think for yourself, How overwhelmed can you sometimes feel? Use a a scale from 1–10; where 1 = not at all and 10 = the worst It’s ever been.

Don’t leave it too late to take control of being overwhelmed. It really can be just another action on your to do list. And think what a difference that could make.

To your health and wellbeing
