What are ‘soft skills’ and why do they matter, you may ask. Let me ask you a different question; how is it possible for the interviewer to know if the candidates apply for a specific role are a good cultural fit for the company, just by looking at their CV and cover letter?
Well, there are hard skills – which we all can guess from the name is the opposite of soft skills. Hard skills are your technical abilities, which are tangible and can be measured.
Now, soft skills are nothing of the sort. They are the individuals' personal traits which are the key for people to building relationships, enhancing in their career and ultimately being successful.
Soft skills requirements vary when it comes to design a job in a company's given context. It all depends on the position and where, how it fits within the organisational structure. For example, a customer service representative should be able to communicate well with others but does not necessarily need top-notch leadership skills.
Most employers believe that soft skills are crucial when finding an ‘ideal candidate’ – someone who uses critical thinking and can communicate well. In fact, Deloitte’s 2016 Global Human Capital Trends reported that 92% of respondents stated that these skills are the most important factor when choosing suitable candidates.
Soft skills are the core of who the individual (candidate, employee) is and employers understand this; they want to find out what their future talent strengths and weaknesses are. They want to break down the candidate's walls, brick by brick, to find out what’s inside that makes the applicants the best candidate for the job.
But how employers can achieve that?
Psychometric tests enable employers to select candidates in a way that is fair and impartial based on an extensive job analysis and review of the skills and qualities required to perform effectively in the role.
There are several different types of test and employers will often use more than one type depending on the requirements of the job.
A relatively new development that gains more and more the attention of the world of psychometric testing is gamified testing. These tests involve playing short rapid-response games or playing longer interactive scenarios.
A few of the major employers are using game-based assessment solutions are, RBS, Deloitte, Unilever, and no doubt many more will soon.
The results have shown that gamified format of psychometric testing is more reliable to measure personality (behaviours and traits) as they collect thousands of data-points about the person/candidate that takes the test over a number of different games providing more of an indicator of how the individuals really behave than relying on what they say about themselves in a questionnaire.
