SO... about a year ago, I went to a networking event and got speaking with a chap who was involved in waste management (not the Sopranos type of waste management) and we got talking about what we both did, swapped cards etc and I also asked him if it was ok that I contacted him, by putting him on my database. He aid that was fine, and we both left.
Every 2 months or so, I sent him an email as part of my campaigns I send out, updating contacts on recent work and updates etc, as well as a few phone calls.
Just before Christmas, I sent out my usual email entitled 'The silent sales man' ...but I took the time to personalise about 10 of the the warmest contacts I had. - The email explained that santa was one of the best 'sales collectors' ever. Every 12 months the whole world contacts Santa letting them know what they want. He never has to call anyone, go to any meetings, or take new products to show his list of cantacts.
All I wanted for Christmas... I explained, was an hour, to see if there is anything I could help with, along the lines of their branding and marketing activity... I promised not to bring along Santa, but would bring the mince pies.
I have had 3 contacts get back to set up meetings in the next few weeks - including the waste management man.
The moral of this tale is - dont expect sales and leads to come down the Chimney!!!
